First of all. . . if you didn’t sing that like Bono did, we have failed.
Aside from the U2 inspired title, you may have noticed an extra face up there. That’s our mom, and we write this piece as a tribute to her, this Mother’s Day. If you know our mom – you know that she’s one of the kindest, sweetest, happiest and best all-around moms out there. If you don’t – now you do; recognize. Similarly, if you know us at all, you’d know that we both credit our appreciation for all-things-beauty to our one-of-a-kind mother.
For as long as we can remember, we’ve been watching our mom “get ready” . She never underestimated the power and importance of mascara and she always respected what we like to call “the finishing touches.” Believe us when we say this blog wouldn’t exist without her – so, really, from this point on we ask that all likes and shares include a “thanks, Marlene” sentiment, just. . .like. . .mumble it under your breath. Ok, cool.
We thought long and hard about the subject of our tribute piece to her – and after much deliberation, we agreed that the obvious choice was jewellery. Our mom, Marlene, is the queen of the accessory – we go on the record and state that you will never see her without a necklace, or a bracelet, or less than 10 rings. We bow to you, Marlene, and thank you for teaching us the importance and the power of the jewels.
This is our friend, Denise.
We’ve been friends for a very long time, and have recently signed up to run a half-marathon together. Needless to say we both have a new appreciation for the other’s sailor-inspired vernacular. In addition to being able to run 21km, Denise is an extremely talented esthetician at the Vanity Vault and specializes in the art of the body waxing and the up-and-coming trend, brow extensions. Seriously. Just book an appointment. Meow.
Denise is a self-proclaimed accessory fraidy-cat. She generally likes to keep things simple and is worried about choosing the wrong piece. So why not educate Denise, while we enlighten the rest of you. Also – we get a sick satisfaction out of saying: “See! We told you so!” Kidding! Kind of.
The premise of this post is to illustrate the power of the accessory. We’ve chosen to focus specifically on the necklace. Each of these necklaces are from Libertee’s collection and have been purchased over the course of a number of years; proving that key pieces can stand the test of time. Additionally, each and every one of the necklaces are what we like to call “cheap and cheerful” and generally speaking, cost less than $20.00.
To prove our point, we actually went through Denise’s closet and selected articles of clothing that we felt could be given a bit of extra umph with the addition of a statement necklace.
Before we get to the main event – let’s learn a lesson from the less talented, opening act:
Do Not. We repeat. DO NOT do this. Pairing a big earing with a giant necklace will make you look like an idiot.
The 360 Tour: Outfit Metamorphosis
From Boring to Blitzy
Denise admittedly has never worn this dress before, expressing that she was unsure how to make it look like she was wearing it, instead of it wearing her. By pairing this dress, with a large necklace, we’ve drawn some of the attention away from the bold print of the dress, and instead, towards her gorgeous face. We recommend with a pattern this daring, and a necklace this extreme, to pair the outfit with a nude shoe – simply preventing the top of your outfit from competing with the bottom.
From Collar to Holla!
We love ourselves a collar and we also love the masculine feel of buttoning up a shirt all the way up to the top. To soften up this masculine look and add a dash of femininity we’ve paired a statement necklace under a crisp collar. Traditionally, when wearing a necklace this strong, we would rarely recommend adding layered bracelets to the outfit; however, because Denise’s arms are bare, the bracelets act like a bit of a sleeve and serve to balance the outfit. Drawing on the same masculine / feminine juxtaposition we’ve paired these feminine bangles with a testosterone-laiden-timepiece (a dude’s watch).
The Investment Piece
The outfit Denise is seen wearing here is actually quite casual: denims cut-offs, a white camisole and a taupe collarless jacket as well as a pair of camel, gladiator-inspired shoes. The nude undertones of each of the pieces work extremely well together and compliment her skin tone beautifully; however, the nude undertones also tend to make the overall look a bit bland. Insert a piece from Kate Hewko’s website. Libertee admittedly spent more than $20 on this necklace, but claims to have “worn the heck out of it.” If you love – invest in it. As you can see, the addition of this gorgeous necklace takes this outfit from a yield sign in a small town to a big city, traffic-stopping-look.
From Backstreet Boys to Bon Jovi (Libertee!)
Not that we have anything against the Backstreet Boys, but if they were in the same room as Bon Jovi, we’d pick Bon Jovi. Actually, Libertee would knock Lecina out and take JBJ all to herself. What we were trying to say before Libertee’s Bon Jovi crush got us off topic, again, is that jewellery has the ability to take an outfit from adolescence to adulthood with the fastening of a clasp. The picture speaks for itself. In addition to adding a pop of bling to an all-black outfit, the addition of this necklace makes for a more mature, pulled together look. Eat your heart out, Jon.
If you’re working 9-5 statement necklaces have the ability to add a bit of color and confidence to otherwise cookie-cutter-corporate looks. Don’t get us wrong, we love a pencil-skirt, but day-in and day-out, the pencil can get a bit dull. We’ve added a gorgeous, red, drop-bead necklace to a colorless, professional looking outfit that will be sure to get you that promotion you’ve been working towards! *Disclaimer, that’s not true, but you’ll look great!
