The way we see it, there is one of two roles that women have historically been cast for in all western movies. The first is the Calamity Jane –Type; the badass one that slings a gun, knows what she wants and does what’s necessary to get it. The second is the girl hanging out on the balcony of the saloon, generally missing a tooth or two, spending the majority of her time cajoling men who haven’t bathed in four months to bang. The choice is yours, but this Stampede Season, we encourage you to choose the former.
In honour of Calgary’s Annual Stampede, and in appreciation of the timeless, western-inspired style, we dedicate today’s post to the women of the Wild West – proving that you don’t have to bathe yourself in tassels, don an embarrassingly large belt buckle, or sacrifice your dignity to get your cowgirl on.
We especially love today’s looks as they are from completely local to YYC and independent shops – Coveted, and Lost in Layers. Be sure to scroll down to shop your heart out!
This is our friend, Ashlyn;
a true prairie girl from Imperial Saskatchewan transplanted to the Cowboy Capital of the World, Calgary. Ashlyn is a proud mother to two gorgeous babes and the wife of a seriously handsome cowboy. A school teacher that’s currently committed to raising her herd. . . sorry, Ashlyn, family, she’s still interested in participating in Stampede Festivities, but not interested in getting her tarte on. We’re your Huckleberry, Ashlyn!
Three Amigos Appropriate
We love this look because it’s evening-weather-appropriate without being bulky. Aztec prints are on trend right now and pair perfectly with a cowboy boot. Let the pattern of the poncho be the star by adding a plain white tank and denim cut offs to complete the look. Caliente!
We love this Lost in Layers Kimono created by the supremely talented, Lindsay Sabean, for so many reasons; primarily it’s fashionably gorgeous, but also delightfully functional! This light layer provides protection from the day time sun without causing you to overheat. Read: you’ll look hot, but the good kind. Add this kimono to cowboy boots on top of cut offs and a plain white tank to dress up the look. Also on trend, we’ve added a floppy hat to finish the look – we prefer this to the free “cowboy hats” you get from Budweiser reps . . . Just don’t.
The Quick and the Drop Dead Gorgeous
We love this look for about a million reasons, but specifically because of its ability to translate from day time to party time. We’ve added a long crop top to this floral print skirt; with just a sliver of skin showing, and a denim jacket over top, this looks walks the line of sexy yet sophisticated. When it’s time to party, ditch the jacket and find a two-step partner and put those cowboy boots to work.
3:10 to Yummy
How cute is this dress? We love the pop of detail in the back, and how well it pairs with a denim vest. Be sure to wear all sorts of SPF with this one, as the spider-web tan lines just aren’t worth it. Day or night, this playful number does all sorts of great things for your legs . . . tucked into cowboy boots of course.
Bad Girls, Ballin’
First of all, if you haven’t seen Bad Girls, fix that. Second of all, if you ever owned a band tee shirt back in the day, (Nirvana, if you can swing it) – go dig it out of the closet. We absolutely love mixing a graphic tee with a plaid shirt. Wearing the plaid, or having it tied around your waist mixes just enough bad ass with cowgirl cunning. Don your (modest) Daisy Dukes, and throw on your cowboy boots – you’re ready to wrangle just about anything. Hey! Wranglers – that makes sense!
