It happens to us all of the time, particularly when we wear a dramatic shade of lipstick we hear: “that looks so good on you, but I could never!”
We’re here to tell you, once and for all. Yes you could.
With the change in season, comes a whole new slough of “trends” and it is with this proverbial changing of the guard happening as we speak, we wanted to take the opportunity to encourage you to step a wee bit outside of your comfort zone. Ok encourage isn’t strong enough, we’re going to go with: Just do it!
Generally speaking, most of us have a bit of trouble signing up for trends because of their short life span and the associated cost. Namely we ask ourselves: “why would I spend money on something that I’ll wear once.” Grant it, most trends have a longer shelf life than one wear, but we get it. The other side of this coin we hear is: “that’s not me,” but the reality of the matter is trends aren’t anyone - their very essence is based on the fact that they’re new! So. . . we don’t buy it.
The good news is not all trends are ridiculous, nor are they overly expensive. The following are a list of some recent trends that are both accessible and have proven themselves to have some staying power.
A dramatic shade of lipstick
We love fall for obvious reasons like big comfy sweaters and massive scarves, but we also love how its colour scheme complements all sorts of dramatic lip shades. This fall, we encourage you to enter your local Sephora, talk to an associate about shades that would nicely match your skin tone and rock that shit out. Remember to tone down the rest of your make-up when you do, subtle blush and basic eye makeup. If you’re still trepidatious about taking this leap, don’t forget about Sephora’s rad return policy. . .
The nice part about statement jewellery is that you can get some pretty impressive pieces without breaking the bank; going the cheap and cheerful route a la Forever 21 or Aldo first is a great way to “feel out” statement pieces. Pay attention to how they look with various outfits and keep tabs on how often you’re wearing the piece. If it’s into high rotation, perhaps mention a version of this necklace a la Kate Hewko (as pictured above) as a rad Christmas hint. . . or even better, treat yo self.
These border on the investment side of our trend recommendation, but we share them keeping in mind how often we wear ours. They’re perfect with a big old sweater and ankle booties, and add a dose of glam to any outfit. Liquid leggings are available at lower price points, but we caution you with every ounce of caution we can muster here: the ultra-low-price-point liquid leggings are made from an extremely thin fabric and in the right light essentially act like a magnifying glass to every piece of texture on your body. You’ve been warned. Both Aritizia and Vera Moda make a nice and sturdy liquid legging!
The changing of the season is actually the perfect time to integrate a statement vest into your wardrobe. The weather isn’t so frigid that we require a winter parker, but it’s a little cooler than a fall jacket can accommodate. We love throwing these vests on over a light sweater; if it’s chilly where you’re going, keep it on, you’ll fit right in; if your office runs on 17th century radiators, maybe take it off once you get to work. Point being, they’re over the moon cute and super easy to integrate into your wardrobe, not to mention practical. We love the idea of purchasing a neutral shade as it will complement more pieces in your wardrobe!
Put down the nude lipstick. Just put it down. . .
